Title:Understanding the Relative Volatility of Chemicals; Implications for Measuring VOC Content and Defining a VOC.

Abstract: The coatings industry is currently facing the significant challenge of reformulating traditional architectural paint to zero VOC (volatile organic compound) content. In response to this, suppliers have developed new zero VOC resins and additives. Government agencies and related organizations are also struggling to develop sensible new regulations that set forth attainable and sensible goals which are not too economically onerous. Perhaps the most challenging part of newly evolving regulations is the definition of what a VOC is. The proper categorization of coatings additives as VOC, partial VOC and zero VOC requires a reasonable definition of what a VOC is along with a relatively easy test for verifying the status of new compounds. This talk will cover the numerous subtleties and, in some cases, contradictions that are inherent with the current methods of defining a VOC. More direct and accurate approaches will be presented.
